Jensen Mixers
Heavy Duty · Belt Driven · Petroleum Service · Models 450 & 480 · Maximum 75 HP

Jensen Series 400 Mixers are heavy duty, belt driven units designed for long life and trouble-free operation in petroleum service. The Series 400 is supported entirely by the tank manway or nozzle — no tie rods, slings, bases, or external supports required. Light weight and low-overhang design reduce installation costs and simplify maintenance.
| Parameter | Model 450 | Model 480 |
|---|---|---|
| H.P. (Max) | 20 | 75 |
| Shaft R.P.M. | 425 | 425 |
| Critical Speed | 1,960 RPM | 2,520 RPM |
The Jensen Type "F" mechanical seal is an integral part of every Series 400 Mixer and is designed for long life at low cost. Materials of construction were especially selected to suit petroleum applications. Both sealing members are extra heavy to prevent face distortion. If seal replacement is necessary, wearing parts may be purchased separately, cutting replacement cost in half.
Standard Materials
Optional Materials
The Jensen Sentry System, available exclusively on the 450 and 480 models, consists of an externally-mounted lube pod that connects to the fluid-filled chamber surrounding the mixer's mechanical seal. In the event of a mechanical seal breach, the gravity-lubricated system detects and safely holds maximum tank head pressure — preventing tank contents from leaking onto the ground. Similar to API Plan 65B.
Jensen standard materials offer optimum performance in hydrocarbon applications.
| Component | Material |
|---|---|
| Shaft & Wear Sleeve | 416 Stainless Steel |
| Lock Ring & Lock Bushing | 316 Stainless Steel |
| Propeller | Cast Steel |
| Drive Yoke | 356-T6 Aluminum |
| O-Rings | Viton |
Mounting
Supported entirely by the tank manway or nozzle. No tie rods, slings, bases, or external supports required.
Shaft Support
Main thrust bearing at outboard end plus shaft end bearing near tank shutoff device. Long bearing span virtually eliminates shaft whip. All moving parts enclosed by protective covers.
Drive System
Rugged V-Belt drive train designed for long life and maximum reliability. Recent advances in V-belt technology reduce inspection frequency and adjustment requirements. Drive pulley is machined steel.
Tank Shutoff Device
Keyed to the shaft and seated against the propeller. Corrosion resistant materials, self-cleaning design, positive sealing after years of service.
Tungsten Carbide End Support
Solid tungsten carbide for greatest resistance to wear in abrasive environments.
Ferrule Seal
Superior flex fatigue resistance, longer running time, 14mm pitch. Perfect fit around VA ball and nozzle. Chemically inert material.

Defining your requirement and selecting the right mixer is critical. Mixer applications fall into two categories:
Blending — Fixed Angle
A Jensen 400 Fixed Angle Mixer is ideal for blending miscible fluids, preventing stratification, eliminating surface solidification, and heat transfer for uniform temperature. Installed at slight angles relative to the tank centerline — typically 10° in large tanks, 7° in small tanks. Locate close to and clockwise from the fill line.
Desired flow pattern:
Cleaning — Vari-Angle
For sediment removal, select the Jensen Model 400-VA Vari-Angle Mixer. In applications requiring both blending and cleaning, use the Vari-Angle model.
Mechanical Actuator
The Jensen mechanical actuator automatically sweeps through a 60° entry angle, operating left-to-right and back, completing a full cycle in approximately 28 hours.
Manway inside diameter (inches) required to insert propeller. H = manway depth (inches); columns = propeller diameter (inches).
Example: A 29" propeller will rotate through a 23" opening provided the opening depth is 8" or less.

Almost every vibration problem with Jensen Mixers results from too little clearance between the tank walls, tank floor, and mixer propeller. Low fluid levels may draw air into the propeller stream and cause vibration.
