All popular sizes and materials of construction are available, with flanged, threaded and special connections, as well as rotator, flapper, drip-tube or plain indicator styles. Also included are threaded, oblong and conventional sight windows.  Click here if you are looking for eductors / jet pumps

Jacoby Tarbox ® Sight flow indicators provide an effective way to view the condition of liquids or solids flow through pipelines at most any flow, pressure, or temperature, a major advantage over electronic devices where it is difficult to distinguish if there is a flow problem or malfunction in the device.

Jacoby Tarbox ® Sight Flow Indicators assure a direct and positive indication of flow rate, flow direction, and condition of the medium being transported plus enable a means of inspecting pipelines for dirt, scale, and foreign matter.

Economical, easy to install, and an inexpensive investment for installations in viewing stations at many points throughout a processing system, Jacoby Tarbox ®  distributes sight flow indicators worldwide to meet routine as well as the most punishing applications.  The complete line offers a wide range of body materials, gasket materials, glass types, window designs, rubber lined, corrosion-resistant TFE-lined indicators.  All major styles are offered in a variety of sizes with threaded, flanged, or other end connections; operating pressures from 20 PSIG to 3000 PSIG; and are fully ANSI Rated or Nominal ANSI Rated.  Special Jacoby Tarbox ® indicators can be designed to accommodate specific application requirements for virtually every phase of liquid movement.  Click here if you are looking for eductors / jet pumps

Valuable for minimizing or eliminating downtime, plant engineers can view actual line conditions and the quality of oil used to lubricate plant equipment.  With steam processes, Jacoby Tarbox ®  indicators enable personnel to detect, at a glance, the presence of condensate and to promptly take steps to eliminate it.  By clearly showing drops in flow rates and discoloration of material when filters become clogged, corrective action can be taken immediately.  In applications involving the processing of solids, straight-through sight flow indicators are recommended.  Download Product Support Information

Click to openFactors Pertinent in Specifications
  • Operating pressures and temperatures - These have a direct bearing on the choice of material for the body, seal, and viewing glass.
  • Characteristics of the medium - The choice of body, seal, and viewing glass material is directly affected by the chemical and physical characteristics of the medium being transported. The degree of opacity or transparency, viscosity, and corrosiveness must all be considered.
  • Characteristics of the process - Such factors as the rate and volume of flow, direction of flow (horizontal, upward vertical, or downward vertical), and other operational considerations.

Installation - The physical make-up of the process line, accessibility, and space limitations must be considered.

Click to openIndicator Choices
  • Flapper models indicate flow by the position of a vane or flapper in the center of the viewing window and are recommended for applications involving transparent or slightly opaque solutions. Frequently specified to indicate the variations in the flow rate of gases as well as liquids, flapper models are bi-directional, designed for horizontal and upward vertical flow applications. When it is not necessary to visualize flow motion, the same basic sight flow indicator is supplied without a flapper component.
  • Rotary models indicate flow by the spinning of a rotor and are suitable for any flow direction and are especially suited for applications involving dark solutions. The rotor motion is easily seen, even from great distances, and recommended for uses with transparent solutions or gases. Rotors are supplied in materials that are impervious to many kinds of fluids and should be used if the flow rate is to be detected.
  • Drip models are for vertical downward flow applications in distillation and similar systems involving extremely low or intermittent flow. A strong advantage of a drip model is absolutely no obstruction to downward flow. Plain models without drip tubes operate effectively with flow in any direction and those with tubes have them positioned in the center window area for ease of observation.
  • Ball models are for low‑volume, vertical upward flow applications, particularly those involving slow-moving solutions. The ball used is highly visible to indicate flow accurately at a glance.
  • Tube models for low-pressure vertical or horizontal flow are recomended for applications requiring maximum visibility. They should be used only in systems that do not place mechanical strains on the pipeline. Models vary in length up to 48 inches and tube diameters up to 13 inches.
  • Cylindrical sheathed-tube models provide the high visibility of regular tube models, along with sheathing to increase support and protection of the indicator, and take some degree of mechanical strain.
  • Jacketing for drip and flapper styles is supplied for improved temperature control at visual inspection stations along jacketed processing lines.

Jacoby-Tarbox offers several body materials, the most common include cast iron, bronze, carbon steel, and 316 stainless steel. Other choices include 304 stainless steel, Alloy 20, Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel, and PVC, depending upon the model. A choice of corrosion-resistant linings, including Teflon, are available for certain flanged connection sight flow indicators. The use of linings with standard body materials often provides cost savings compared to indicators made of alloyed body materials.

0perating temperatures are a major factor in sealing material selection. Neoprene is the standard gasket material with other materials supplied, depending on operating temperatures and compatibility with the medium handled. Seal material choices include Teflon with a neoprene or non-asbestos insert, butyl, Buna-N, silicone, fluorocarbon, and graphite.

The maximum pressure at which a sight flow indicator safely operates is determined by the characteristics of the glass window. Standard windows are made of borosilicate glass. Sight flow indicators for high-pressure use are specified with a dual window for systems in which extra precautions are necessary. Examples include systems carrying hazardous materials or those in heavy traffic areas where externally caused damage is a concern.

Windows may be supplied in plastic materials such as acrylic and polycarbonate. Quartz windows are used for high-temperature (above 500F) applications. Shields, such as Kel-F, PFA, or mica are used for materials that erode or etch glass. Cylinders used in tubular sight flow indicators are available in borosilicate and acrylic. Glass cylinders have a maximum temperature rating of 450F. Acrylic has a rating of 185F for intermittent use and 145F for continuous use.

Jacoby Tarbox ® exclusively offers UniGlas windows, specifically designed for rugged conditions, featuring exceptional resistance to impact, pressure, scratching, and pitting. Even when intentionally cracked in performance testing, UniGlas showed only slight weepage with no window blowout or failure, providing the safest possible performance even in conditions not normally encountered in process lines. All UniGlas components are single units of borosilicate glass fused to metal. UniGlas is used to make the Uni-San-6500 sight window, which is standard on all Jacoby-Tarbox TruSan 6000 Sight Flow Indicators. UniGlas is available in dual and single-window styles. Capable of handling most high-pressure system temperatures to 530F and including sealing surfaces finished to comply with 3-A Fittings Standards, this design surpasses competitive models with no undue assembly or adjustments. A one-piece construction, the windows are perfect in sanitary applications, employ no glass bonding agents, and require no shims, packings, or adjusting screws for installation.

UniGlas Sight Windows and Tru-San Sight Flow Indicators are manufactured for both new and retrofit installations and installed in conjunction with tanks, vessels, autoclaves, pipelines, vacuum components, compressors, pumps, filters, and other related equipment.

Jacoby-Tarbox offers illuminators which provide clear and accurate viewing of indicators in poorly lighted areas. Ready to install, easily adjustable, the site lights contain fluorescent lamps that do not require starters and are supplied in standard and explosion-proof designs. Where space or system design characteristics make straight-line sight flow indicators unusable, 90 Degree Angle Models are recommended. All sight flow indicators should be installed at points easily accessible for observation by personnel.
