Clark-Reliance / Jacoby-Tarbox® Bulletins T500-6 (Phaeton XTL) and T500.7 (Phaeton SL/HL)
Phaeton® XTL™
LED illuminator for sight flow indicators and sight windows. Mounts directly to the sight flow or sight window with supplied hardware. FM/CSA Class I, Div. 1 rated. Bulletin T500-6.
Phaeton® SL/HL
Sight light for a wide range of applications where illumination is required. Available in Class/Division (FM/CSA) and Zone (IECEx/ATEX) certified configurations. Bulletin T500.7.
The Jacoby-Tarbox® Phaeton® XTL™ and Phaeton® SL/HL Sight Light meet or exceed all applicable specifications when shipped from the factory. These units can be applied in many different applications where light is required.
All units should be inspected upon receipt to ensure that no damage has been incurred during transit. If there has been damage, a claim should be filed with the carrier immediately. Units should be stored in an area protected from the elements and corrosive fumes, in a secure manner where they can neither fall nor be struck by other objects.
Care should be taken to protect the window and the end connections from damage. Avoid placing any objects directly on the light at any time.
There are three main components that make up the LED illuminator:
LED Housing
Anodized aluminum or 316 stainless steel LED assembly. Available in 4" and 6" sizes for the XTL; aluminum or 316SS for the SL series.
Power Supply
Explosion-proof epoxy-coated aluminum enclosure. Available in 120/240 VAC (XTL FM/CSA) and 115/230 VAC (SL FM/CSA or IECEx/ATEX).
DC Power Cord
Blue power cord connecting the LED housing to the power supply. Extension cords available in 6.5 ft, 16 ft, and 32 ft lengths. Maximum distance: 72 ft (22 M).
Note: Questions regarding acceptable applications should be directed to The Clark-Reliance® Corporation or Northeast Controls Inc.
Caution: All lights are tagged with the service conditions for that particular unit. These specifications are located on the Jacoby-Tarbox® tag on the power supply housing and are contained in the "Specifications" section of this manual. Do not use or refer to specifications listed on the red label on the power supply housing — those specifications are specific to the enclosure only. Review the ratings prior to installation and again prior to start-up to ensure proper operation in the installed environment. Should there be any doubt pertaining to the application of a unit for the installed environment, consult the factory before placing the unit into service.
Caution: Light should only be connected to the power supply provided with the unit.
Note: All installation steps should be performed by a qualified technician and should be executed in accordance with all applicable national and local codes.
The light and power supply should be checked to ensure that they contain no foreign matter, and that the end connections are clean and undamaged.
Caution: Before working with the power supply, verify that the area is free of flammables and the AC power circuit is off.
Mount the LED housing to the sight flow or sight window with the supplied mounting hardware.
Open the cover of the power supply housing. Insert the AC Line wires into the housing and connect to the "AC IN" terminal block. Ground screws are located inside and outside the enclosure.
CAUTION: The DC output is pre-wired. If this connection is removed during installation, reconnect the "AC IN" and "DC OUT" to the proper positions. Failure to do so will result in permanent damage to the power supply. (Ref. Fig. 1 in original bulletin.)
IMPORTANT: A sealing fitting must be installed within 18" of the enclosure when mounting in Hazardous Locations. Do not install any components between the sealing fitting and the power supply.
If the cable will not reach the power supply, contact your local representative for the required extension cable.
Replace the cover on the power supply housing.
Switch "ON" the power supply, making sure the Illuminator is functioning properly with all LEDs illuminated.
Refer to the Troubleshooting section (Section 06) if a portion or all of the LEDs do not illuminate.
Warning: To avoid damage to eyes, do not look directly into the Phaeton® XTL™ light.
Warning: Never disconnect the blue DC Power Cord while the power supply is energized. Disconnecting and re-connecting while energized can cause damage to the LEDs.
The Phaeton LED illuminator runs continuously. The operating life of the LEDs is 100,000 hours (over 10 years) under normal conditions. Customers may install a switch or timer if desired.
Keep the window on the front of the light clean using commercial glass cleaners, such as Windex® or similar. Never use harsh abrasives, wire brushes, metal scrapers, or any material that could scratch the window. The window may be cleaned while the unit is in operation.
The light may be removed while the unit is in operation during inspection or maintenance of the customer's sight flow indicator.
Replacement Parts Warning
The use of Non-Original Equipment Manufacturer parts (such as glass, gaskets, probes, modules, etc.) will void the Agency Approval (FM, UL, CSA, ETL, etc.), pressure/temperature rating, and warranty of this equipment. Clark-Reliance requires the use of OEM parts for all repairs on this product in order to maintain plant and personnel safety and reliable operation.
Note: See Figure 1 in the original bulletin (T500-6) for component locations. Some troubleshooting steps are performed with live voltage applied — move the assembly to a safe area before beginning work. A qualified and properly trained technician must perform these steps.
Troubleshooting Guide
| Problem | Possible Cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| All LEDs out | No AC line voltage; Blown fuse; Loose/disconnected DC output wires; Blue power cord loose or connector damaged; Loose or damaged connections inside LED assembly; Damaged power supply; Defective LED board | Follow troubleshooting steps below |
| (2) LEDs out | Defective LED board or loose connection inside LED housing | Contact Factory |
Troubleshooting Steps — All LEDs Out
Remove the enclosure cover and look to see if the red LED power indicator is on. If the red LED is on, go to step 4.
Check AC wiring to make sure it is properly installed and tightened in the connector.
Using a meter, verify AC line voltage at the AC connector.
Disconnect AC power. Using a small pair of needle-nose pliers, gently remove the fuse from the holder.
Check the fuse for continuity with an Ohm meter. If there is continuity, re-install the fuse. If there is no continuity, replace the fuse.
Check DC output wiring to make sure it is properly installed and tightened.
Reconnect AC power.
Using a voltmeter set to DC, measure the voltage across the output connector. Voltage should be between 6 VDC and 12 VDC.
Unscrew and remove the blue power cord. Inspect the 4 pins inside the end connector to make sure they are straight and undamaged. If pins are bent, use a small pair of needle-nose pliers to straighten them. If pins are missing, contact factory.
Reconnect the power cord, making sure connectors are fully seated and tightened.
If all steps above check OK, contact factory for support.
Note: Make sure AC power is off before removing the cover. Screws are installed with liquid thread lock — if screws will not come loose, sharply hit the back of the screwdriver with a hammer to help release the hold of the thread lock.
Loosen the cover locking screw and open the cover of the power supply housing. Disconnect AC power and remove AC wires from the enclosure.
Remove the assembly from the gage and relocate to the desired work area.
Unplug the DC power plug.
Remove the 2 screws holding the power supply sub-assembly in place.
Place the new power supply into position in the enclosure, apply permanent liquid thread lock to the screws, and reinstall screws.
Re-connect the DC power plug and bench test the unit by applying AC through the AC Input Connector (ref. Figure 1 in original bulletin).
